Why I’ve Closed My Instagram Account
In light of Mark Zuckerberg’s recent alignment with the incoming Trump administration and his explicit support for policies undermining democracy, I have decided to shut down my Instagram account on January 20th, the day of Trump’s inauguration. I urge others to take the same step.
Zuckerberg’s decision to abandon “restrictions” on hate speech demonstrates an alarming embrace of authoritarian values. Increasingly, corporations like McDonald’s and Walmart are eliminating diversity goals for leadership roles and abandoning DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) programs, signaling the accelerating collapse of the democratic principles that have underpinned Western civilization for decades.
Trump will go down in history as the first openly fascist American president. The involvement of corporations like Meta, Boeing, Amazon, Apple, Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, Uber, Ford etc. in financing his inauguration represents a collective surrender to authoritarianism.
As a German, I understand firsthand the horrific consequences that inevitably result from fascism. It is one thing to condemn historical profiteers of the Third Reich, like Krupp or Riefenstahl, but it is quite another to decide, here and now, what role each of us will play in resisting the normalization of fascism. By continuing to use platforms like Instagram, we unwittingly contribute to this dangerous trajectory. The choice is clear: stand by passively or take action. By deleting my account, I am hoping to contribute to a broader movement that refuses to be complicit. – Feel free to copy & share.
